a plan of action
The USGBC-LA Board of Directors and Chapter Leaders have been hard at work this year, post-Greenbuild LA and post-Presidential election to steer a clear path forward. The 10-year strategic plan was crafted in 2011, setting the groundwork for the Chapter’s activities and growth. Looking ahead, the next three years will be focused on inspiration, education, advocacy, and partnerships. All of this leads me to be very confident that USGBC-LA will be creating opportunities for members and stakeholders to realize their potential within all our communities for a more sustainable built environment. A million thanks to everyone who participated in the interview process, workshops, and surveys which shaped the thinking behind the key strategies for the USGBC-LA.
Special thanks to Robert Fortunato for leading us through this process and Russell Fortmeyer for leading the Board’s sub-committee for developing the Strategic Plan.
The first major item incorporated in the plan was the redefinition of the mission statement. To capture the geographical growth of the Chapter from Los Angeles County to also include San Bernardino County and Riverside County, we are now referring to our region as Southern California. You’ll also notice a key word change from “promoting” to “accelerating”, giving us all the sense of urgency that we seek from our members and supporters to deliver progress. The third point is rooted in whether we seek only to accelerate rating systems, policies, or projects? USGBC-LA wants to accelerate all aspects. This means sites, plants, food systems, resiliency, transportation and infrastructure, buildings (residential and commercial), and sustainable development throughout all of these.
The newly approved mission statement of USGBC-LA is; Accelerating all aspects of sustainability in Southern California’s built environment through delivering access to knowledge, resources, recognition, and networking.
The four key objectives of the plan are:
- To inspire our community to become forward-thinking leaders in the built environment.
- To empower the market through education to expand sustainability in new and existing buildings.
- To build collaborative relationships with mutual non-profits and institutions to strengthen our community networks to tackle big challenges.
- To advocate progressive policy agendas to drive market transformation and improve our region.
