Northern California Regional Leadership Advisory Board
The Northern California Regional Leadership Advisory Board (RLAB) works to educate and motivate green building leaders towards industry-scale transformational change in service of more resilient and sustainable communities. Through meaningful collaboration, and the alignment of a unified California green building community, we are responding to the climate crisis by advocating for a regenerative, high-performing built environment that we can tangibly experience and enjoy–healthy materials, clean air, and clear water. We want to advance a better quality of life for all, while generating a lower global carbon footprint, reducing utility rates, and creating new jobs for a growing green economy.
Located in a region that is equivalent to the 10th largest economy of the world, the Northern California RLAB offers programs and hosts events throughout the year. Our initiatives focus on building decarbonization, water stewardship, Women in Green, smart buildings, equity, advocacy, supporting emerging professionals, and more.
Leadership
- Regional Leadership Advisory Boards (RLABS) are comprised of passionate leaders who advance transformational communities in their regions across California.
- RLABs build local capacity by developing an initiative (programs or events) that directly benefits members in the region and serves as an active pipeline for community engagement, network development, and impact.
- RLAB members are responsible for generating ideas and initiatives that address local community needs while aligning with USGBC-CA’s mission. RLABs will direct and advise on regional advocacy while providing feedback on statewide or federal policy.
Are you a passionate leader dedicated to transforming communities in your region? Now is your chance to make a lasting impact!
History
Kevin Hydes, a member of USGBC’s Board of Directors and Chair of the Chapter Steering Committee, moved to San Francisco in 2000 and began to build a Northern California community. Early fellow organizers included local SMWM architect Anthony Bernheim; Dan Borgoyne at State of CA DGS; Alistair McGregor at Arup; and HPS architect Sharon Revfem, FAIA, LEED Fellow. Ted Caulkins of Cushman & Wakefield (now at Mantis Innovation) and also on the USGBC Board of Directors, hosted meetings of the fledgling group, and early contributor Brian Sennert, then at Sacramento Municipal Utility District, provided space at the PG&E EnergyCenter for events early on.
Notably, David Gottfried, founder of the U.S. Green Building Council and World Green Building Councils, offered his support, as did Lynn Simon, who was the first official employee of USGBC, and the organizing group proceeded to form what would become the Northern California Chapter, also with the help and support of legal counsel Donald Simon. In the first year, the Chapter had a founding board and a modest budget to launch.
