Have you ever looked out your window in the morning and seen a thick, gray haze over the mountains? In the Inland Empire, we call that smog. While our home is a beautiful place with big hills and lots of sunshine, there’s a bit of a problem with our air. But don’t worry! There is a new plan called the WAIRE Act that is working like a giant vacuum cleaner for our sky. It’s making our air cleaner and our neighborhoods healthier.
Why Is Our Air So Dusty?
To understand why the WAIRE ACT is so important, we have to look at what makes our region special. The Inland Empire is like the “hallway” of California. Because we are close to the ocean and the desert, big companies build huge buildings here called warehouses. These warehouses store everything from the toys you play with to the shoes you wear.
Thousands of big trucks that are fueled by diesel gas drive in and out every single day. When diesel burns, it sends out tiny, invisible bits of “soot” and gas into the air. Because we are surrounded by mountains, that dirty air gets trapped right here with us. It doesn’t just blow away; it stays where we breathe it. This is why some children in our neighborhoods have more trouble with asthma or coughing than kids in other places.
What is the WAIRE Act?
WAIRE stands for Warehouse Actions and Investments to Reduce Emissions. Long name, but it has a simple goal: to make warehouses better neighbors.
Instead of just telling warehouses they are doing a bad job, the WAIRE Act uses a point system, sort of like a video game or a chore chart. Every warehouse has to earn a certain number of points each year. If they do things that help the environment, they get points! If they don’t, they have to pay a fee that goes toward helping the community.
How Do They Earn Points?
Here are a few examples:
- Electric Trucks: Instead of using loud, smelly diesel trucks, they can switch to electric trucks which run on batteries and don’t blow smoke into the air.
- Solar Panels: Warehouses have huge, flat roofs. By covering them with solar panels, they can catch sunlight and turn it into clean power.
- Charging Stations: They can build EV Charging stations for electric cars and trucks so that everyone who works there can drive a clean vehicle.
- Planting Trees: Some warehouses might help by planting trees nearby. Trees act like natural filters that soak up bad air and give us clean oxygen.
Why This Matters for You
The WAIRE Act isn’t just about trucks and buildings, it’s about people. It’s about making sure that every child in the Inland Empire can run around at recess without getting a tight chest or a cough.
When the air is cleaner, our hearts and lungs stay stronger. This is especially key for “Environmental Justice.” That’s an important phrase that should not be used lightly, and means everyone deserves a healthy place to live, no matter who they are. In the past, the neighborhoods closest to the warehouses had the dirtiest air. The WAIRE Act is trying to fix that unfairness by cleaning up the air right where it starts.
A Bright, Clear Future
Changing how things work takes a lot of time and effort. Some people worry that these changes are too hard or too expensive. However, when we think about the cost of being sick, cleaning the air is a great idea!!
The WAIRE Act is a huge step in that direction. It shows that we can have a strong economy with lots of jobs AND have air that is safe to breathe.
The Inland Empire is a hub of the whole world’s stuff, but it is also our home. We want to be a place that is famous for blue skies, home of one of only 5 blue zones in the world and not just buildings and warehouses. The WAIRE Act is a huge step in that direction. It shows that we can have a strong economy with lots of jobs AND have air that is safe to breathe.
Next time you see a big warehouse or a truck on the freeway, you can think about the WAIRE Act. It’s a reminder that when we work together and use smart ideas, we can protect our planet and each other. Learn more here: https://www.aqmd.gov/home/rules-compliance/compliance/waire-program
