Fireproofing for the Future, U.S. Green Building Council California shares Free Tools for Rebuilding


Link to Spectrum News 1 (Feb. 20, 2025) | More than 16,000 homes and structures were destroyed by the Los Angeles-area fires, leaving many homeowners looking for a wildfire defense approach as they rebuild.

It’s a position California residents have been increasingly facing, as wildfires become more common in the state. In response, the California Office of Emergency Services, along with CAL FIRE, have been developing tools homeowners can apply to mitigate the risks of fires to their homes. Among those tools are ways to home harden by retrofitting, vegetation management, and requiring on average 100 feet of defensible space for homes in high-risk zones. 

…Elizabeth Christy with the U.S. Green Building Council California said there is still a way to go before this approach is standard procedure. That’s why she said the U.S. Green Building Council California has been working for years to educate contractors, landscapers and homeowners on the best practices.
