About this event

Companies are continually under more pressure to better understand the environmental impacts of the work they do, especially in identifying their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions through Scope 1, Scope 2, and now Scope 3 emissions calculations. However, most small- to medium-sized businesses lack the capacity to provide this information to their customers, particularly the knowledge of how to set up the systems to track emissions contributions and how to report to their clients as part of their emissions reporting. USGBC-LA will deliver a workshop to help these businesses address the increasing regulatory demands for clean energy, climate action, sustainable supply chains, and EHS management. This will better position and prepare local businesses (commercial, industrial, and contractors) to not only understand their own emissions but to compete for contracts in a shifting marketplace that will require them to provide this information. Awareness of their emissions and the need to compete in reducing these emissions will drive down energy and materials use over time throughout the region.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) encompass a broad category of topics with wide implications for how companies and industries manage and disclose on these topics. Many teams grapple with the issues of when to start, where to start, what to prioritize, and how to justify the work involved. This workshop will prepare these businesses to answer these questions and provide them with the tools to do baseline assessments and report up the supply chain to their customers and agencies such as SoCal Gas. Participants will receive a certificate from USGBC-LA and USGBC-LA will track certificates for future reference.

  • What are the potential Environmental Social and Governance regulatory, resource, and policy demands that could impact your business?
  • Do all the components of Environmental, Social, and Governance matter equally? How do you measure success? How do you measure progress?
  • What are Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, what is the reporting structure for each, and what should we be prepared to provide to customers?

Josh Hatch

Principal, Brightworks Sustainability

Throughout his career, Joshua Hatch has worked for solutions to some of the most pressing issues in sustainability: energy efficiency, climate change, and renewable energy. He has recognized expertise with technology companies and data centers – the technical facilities that power our digital world. His clients include Facebook, Microsoft, Salesforce, Apple, Equinix, Digital Realty, Fidelity, Bank of America, UCLA, NASA, Nike, City of Portland, and City of Seattle.

Through his service on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group (EA TAG), which informs the development of the LEED rating system, Joshua has contributed to concrete improvements for the entire green building industry. His advocacy for technology clients led to the publication of the LEED Building Design + Construction rating system for Data Centers, and he was a leading proponent and author of the latest LEED version 4.1 credits that link optimized energy performance with renewable energy procurement, providing improved recognition for companies committed to achieving 100% renewable energy.

Prior to Brightworks, Josh was a MAP Sustainability Fellow at Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and worked at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where his research contributed to California’s greenhouse gas inventories and atmospheric pollution transport models.

Erin Hocking

Project Manager, Brightworks Sustainability

Erin Hocking is a Consultant in Brightworks’ Sustainable Organizations and Corporate ESG practice, where she supports clients and projects around the country. Working from Brightworks’ Los Angeles office, she consults frequently to clients in the professional service industry on strategies to achieve their corporate sustainability goals.

Erin joins Brightworks with experience supporting green building projects through rating systems like LEED for New Construction and LEED for Operations and Maintenance, Energy Star Portfolio Manager, and the Envision rating system for sustainable infrastructure projects. With a background in projects that have pursued sustainability improvements through both design and construction, and through ongoing operations and maintenance, she contributes to Brightworks’ growing body of work for clients seeking to plan, design and operate greener and more efficient buildings and portfolios.

Erin’s previous work for significant developments in the Los Angeles area includes assisting with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) benchmarking compliance with the Los Angeles Existing Buildings Energy and Water Efficiency Ordinance (EBEWE) for two consecutive years.
