Energy modeling is used to evaluate the energy efficiency of design alternatives and plays an integral part in optimizing building performance.
Learning Objectives:
– When should projects incorporate energy modeling?
– How to leverage the energy model’s data to save on capital and operating expenses, reduce energy consumption, and achieve zero net energy buildings.
– Key findings from project case studies.
Commissioning is a quality assurance process to ensure that the building’s energy and water-related systems are installed, calibrated, and performing as designed.
Learning Objectives:
– When is commissioning required and what are the exceptions?
– How commissioning lowers operating costs, improves long-term building performance, reduces energy and water use, and improves occupant comfort, and productivity.
– Existing buildings and the value of retro-commissioning.
– Soft costs, hard costs, and impact on the schedule.

Meet the Presenters
Ryan McEvoy
Ryan is a principal at Gaia. He is responsible for the positive growth and diversification of the firm’s offerings and brings two decade of experience in real estate development, sustainable energy systems, and green building expertise to the projects Gaia consults on.
Prior to founding Gaia in 2005, Ryan was the development project manager and sustainability coordinator for Yorkshire Development, an early adopter of LEED. Under Ryan’s management, Yorkshire Development’s Tricom Building in Pasadena became the first LEED speculative commercial building in the world and was among the first 15 LEED certified buildings in California. Tricom also became an incredible learning tool for the community: through its development, Ryan introduced the City of Pasadena Planning Department, Water and Power, and the City Council to the benefits of LEED which was instrumental in starting Pasadena’s green building program.
Ryan has taught courses on sustainability at Cal State Dominguez Hills, workshops for USGBC Los Angeles and Northern California Chapters, and speaks regularly at conferences and events throughout the country. He is currently serving as co-chair of the Los Angeles Business Council’s Sustainability committee working to raise awareness and create policy around solar energy and improved energy performance. In addition to his passion for and work towards improving the built environment in Los Angeles, Ryan has worked on environmental programs in Australia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico. And in 2009, Ryan started Collective Solutions, a non-profit organization affiliated with Gaia that works to enhance the quality of life for communities in developing nations. Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Laia Gimeno
Laia Gimeno is an Energy Modeler and Energy Engineer at Gaia. Her experience involves performing energy modeling simulations for international LEED, BREEAM, and VERDE certification projects. Her technical knowledge covers tools such as OpenStudio, Cove.tool, Sketchup, REM/Rate, Energy Plus, eQuest, Rhino, and more.
Laia serves on the board of USGBC Central Texas as Secretary and is a boarm member of IBPSA Houston Chapter. She received a B.S in Energy Engineering from Polytechnic University of Catalonia and her thesis was on “Climate Change, Paris Agreement. Analysis of the long-term development strategies in low emissions presented in countries in front of the UNFCCC.”
