LOS ANGELES (April 16, 2026) The Contractor’s Commitment, a national contractor-led sustainability initiative advancing five key pillars – carbon reduction, waste diversion, water stewardship, materials transparency, and jobsite wellness – offers a practical guide to begin tracking sustainability performance and measure ongoing progress. Under the current Version 2.1 of the framework, the signatories have just completed their 2025 reporting season, and are now previewing plans for the development of version 3.0. Simultaneously, the initiative has just debuted a refreshed website and a new logo.
Launched in 2021, the Contractor’s Commitment was acquired by USGBC California last year and now enters a new phase of strategic growth and program refinement for the current roster of 27 general contractors. The transition has strengthened governance, expanded advisory leadership, solidified partnerships, and positioned the program for broader national impact.
“Contractors are facing increasing pressure from owners, investors, and public agencies to provide increased transparency while demonstrating measurable sustainability performance,” said Ben Stapleton, CEO, USGBC California. “New policies and corporate standards will only continue to move the market forward, the Contractor’s Commitment provides the framework for contractors to make meaningful improvements with tangible actions while Version 3.0 is being designed to reduce duplication and better align with frameworks contractors and developers are already using.”
To that end, Green Badger, Sustaira and Gravity, each of which has long-standing relationships with several signatories, have partnered with USGBC California to support the Contractor’s Commitment by helping drive reductions in the environmental impacts of construction, specifically by improving the data reporting process.
“Now is an exciting and beneficial time for contractors to get involved as we are engaged with peer-led working groups who are looking at where the industry is headed, what national and global requirements are anticipated, and formulating what version 3.0 will look like to meet the goals of a more sustainable approach,” notes Kyle Pickett, USGBC California’s Senior Project Manager, Community Initiatives, who manages the initiative in collaboration with John Ambert, Senior Advisor, Clean Construction.
The initiative’s evolution is being guided by advisory leaders and category working groups composed of industry practitioners and commitment signatories.
Versions 2.1 (Current) and 3.0 (In Development)
For the just-closed 2025 reporting season, signatories and advisory leaders utilized version 2.1 with key updates that allowed contractors to track performance more efficiently while maintaining rigor and credibility:
- Streamlined reporting calculator
- Clearer category structure across Carbon, Waste, Water, Materials, and Wellness
- Improved usability and data organization
- Stronger alignment with sustainability metrics and reporting frameworks
Building on this foundation while incorporating feedback, version 3.0 will focus on:
- Reducing duplicative sustainability reporting
- Aligning more directly with frameworks such as LEED, SBTi, and EcoVadis
- Creating a more data driven, scalable structure
- Enhancing comparability across projects and portfolios
Growth, Expansion & New Branding
The Contractor’s Commitment continues to expand its network of general contractor signatories and advisory participants. As sustainability expectations increase across public and private procurement, the initiative aims to serve as a unified contractor-led benchmark that supports internal operational improvement and external reporting demands.
As part of reshaping the initiative’s future and helping signatories clearly communicate their participation and performance, the Contractor’s Commitment has introduced a refreshed brand identity, including a new logo, color palette, and website designed to elevate and invigorate the program as it enters this next stage of growth and impact.
General contractors interested in advancing sustainability performance and helping shape the next generation of contractor-led standards are encouraged to join the Contractor’s Commitment or participate in the ongoing version 3.0 working sessions.
The 2025 reporting season closed Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
