Building Performance Calculator

USGBC California Building Performance Calculator

A free tool for building owners and stakeholders to evaluate how their existing buildings perform against California's energy and emissions targets. It simplifies the path to compliance with emerging Building Performance Standards (BPS) and supports smarter, greener building decisions.

This tool was created in partnership with Ama Group | CMTA.

Why Building Performance Standards Matter

A Building Performance Standard (BPS) sets minimum energy or emissions requirements that existing buildings must meet over time. Unlike building codes that only apply to new construction, BPS policies target the buildings already in use, which is critical because 80% of the buildings we'll have in 2050 are already standing today.
  • Buildings account for 40% of CO₂ emissions, mostly from energy use such as heating, cooling, and lighting.
  • Older buildings, especially those over 10 years old, often use more energy and are key targets for improvement.
  • New codes alone aren't enough—we must improve what's already built to meet climate goals.

Building Information

Energy Usage

Enter the annual natural gas usage in thousands of BTU per hour (kBtuh). If you have therms, multiply by 100 to convert to kBtuh.

What the Calculator Does

This calculator helps you:
  • Assess your building's current energy/emissions performance
  • Identify opportunities for improvement
  • Get on track with California's evolving building performance requirements
